How to Play Pickleball

Scoring

  • Games are played to 11 points
  • A team must win by 2 points
  • Only the serving team can score points
  • In doubles, the score is called using 3 numbers:
    • the serving team’s score
    • the receiving team’s score
    • the server number (1 or 2)
  • At the start of each game, only one player serves, so the opening score is called 0-0-2

Serving

  • Serves must be made underarm
  • The paddle head must stay below the wrist
  • Contact with the ball must be made below the waist
  • The serve must follow an upward arc
  • The ball must be served diagonally into the opposite service area
  • The serve must clear the Non-Volley Zone (NVZ), also known as the Kitchen
  • The server always begins from the right-hand side
  • If the serving team wins the rally, the server switches sides and continues serving.
  • If the serving team loses the rally, the serve passes to their partner.
  • Once both players on a team have lost serve, the serve passes to the opposing team.

During Play

  • After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before either team can volley it. This is called the double bounce rule
  • After that, volleys are allowed except when standing in the Non-Volley Zone (Kitchen)All lines are in
  • If a serve lands on the NVZ line, it is considered in the Kitchen and is therefore a fault
  • If the ball hits a player or their clothing, that player’s team loses the point
